Webinar on May 29: Overview of CU Boulder's MS in Artificial Intelligence Program. Register here!
CU Boulder's MS-AI program offers a performance-based pathway for all learners - with or without a bachelor’s degree or conventional STEM experience.
Simply complete a three-course pathway in either machine learning or statistical learning for credit. Achieve at least a B in each course, and you’ll be admitted to the master’s degree.
There’s no application required, and with six start dates per year, you can register for the pathway and start studying as soon as you’re ready.
Choose your own academic path, with electives from advanced computing courses in machine learning, reinforcement learning, robotics, natural language processing, and computer vision.
You can even combine your core curriculum with courses from other CU Boulder degrees such as electrical engineering, engineering management and data science.
You can begin studying today, and start earning credits from CU Boulder courses that will count towards your degree - even before you’re admitted to the program.
With this flexible master’s, you’ll set your own pace and path, from admission to graduation.
Yes, it’s the same as the on-campus program. Upon program completion, you’ll receive your diploma. It’s a degree conferred for a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, and your diploma won’t mention Coursera or online study.
Yes, the MS-AI on Coursera is included in the University of Colorado Boulder’s overall accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
Yes, you can enroll in the non-credit experience. This allows you to complete some coursework in MS-AI on Coursera courses before committing to the degree program.
You can upgrade to for-credit at any time during your learning journey. You’ll need to complete additional graded assignments to earn CU credit (this material is only available after you pay tuition).
This degree is self-paced, with no minimum or maximum number of courses required per session.
We recommend you take just one course in the first session as you adjust to the demands of this graduate-level program.
After that, if you’re ready to take on a full-time graduate-level course load, we recommend three courses - or fewer - per session.
Taking three courses per session, you can expect to complete the degree in about two years. To graduate, you must complete all courses (30 total credit hours) within eight years.
It’s CU Boulder Graduate School policy that you can’t register for more than 15 credits in two sessions (one semester). If you’d like to enroll in more than 15 courses in two sessions, you’ll need to go through a petition process to demonstrate your ability to succeed with the additional course load.
Yes. When you graduate from the program, you’re welcome to attend the on-campus graduation ceremonies (if you choose).
No. The MS-AI on Coursera program and on-campus programs are not interchangeable. If you start the Coursera degree, you can’t switch to the on-campus program.
Yes, both versions of the program are overseen by the same highly experienced faculty.
Dedicated course facilitators hold weekly office hours where you can interact and ask questions about the material being covered.
As an MS-AI on Coursera student, you don’t have access to campus facilities, but you can access a wide range of online resources. This includes CU Boulder libraries, career services and alumni services.
Students taking for-credit classes receive an IdentiKey, which includes your CU Boulder login name and password. Your IdentiKey uniquely identifies you and acts as your student identification number.
Students can also receive a physical Buff OneCard (student ID card) for $30 by emailing a headshot, photo ID, and mailing address to boc@colorado.edu from your colorado.edu student email address.
Not at this time.
From CU programs on Coursera: Yes - you can use up to six graduate-level credit hours of courses from other CU programs on Coursera as elective credits toward the MS-AI degree on Coursera.
All courses must be graduate level, offered on Coursera, and meet all applicable academic standards. This includes all courses offered by the ME-EM, MS-DS, MS-CS and MS-EE programs on Coursera.
Credit from these courses cannot be applied toward MS-CS requirements:
Courses can’t be counted twice toward two credentials of the same level. This means:
CU certificates on Coursera are automatically awarded once all requirements are met.
From other CU programs: No, this program doesn’t currently accept transfer credit from CU programs (other than those listed above).
From other institutions: No, this program doesn’t currently accept transfer credit from other institution.
With pay-as-you-go tuition, you only need to pay for the courses you’re taking in the upcoming session when you enroll.
Sessions are eight weeks long, and there are six enrollment sessions per year.
Tuition is $525 per credit hour and $15,750 for the full 30-credit master’s degree.
The ideal preparation would include:
There are no English proficiency tests required for admission. The process is entirely based on your performance on the courses. To be admitted onto CU Boulder's MS-AI, you must complete a three-course pathway for CU credit with a B or better in each course.
The MS-AI on Coursera is open to students around the world.
However, due to current restrictions imposed by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, we can’t provide online courses to the following countries: Cuba, Iran, Sudan, North Korea, Syria, and the Crimea Region of Ukraine.
See CU Online Course Delivery Restrictions for more details.
You can earn an Artificial Intelligence Graduate Certificate on your way to an MS-AI degree without needing more than 30 credits.
This is possible because multiple courses are shared between the MS-AI and AI Graduate Certificate. That means you can apply credits from one course toward both your graduate degree and your graduate certificate.
To earn a CU graduate certificate on Coursera, you must maintain a cumulative certificate GPA of 3.00 or higher. Individual certificates may have additional requirements. CU graduate certificates on Coursera are automatically awarded once all requirements are met.
Make sure you complete all steps to earn the graduate certificate(s) you are most interested in. Additional steps are required to earn graduate certificates offered by CU Boulder degree programs on Coursera other than your own program. Note that the Artificial Intelligence Graduate Certificate is part of CU Boulder's MS in Computer Science (MS-CS) program.
Your program’s student handbook outlines those steps and other important considerations, including rules preventing students from double counting courses between multiple graduate certificates.
You can upgrade and pay tuition during any open enrollment period to earn graduate-level CU Boulder credit for your master’s degree.
If you’re unsure of which program is the best fit for you, review the MS-CS and MS-AI program websites, and then contact mscscoursera-info@colorado.edu or msaionline-info@colorado.edu if you still have questions.
